(that will help you make the best gin cocktails in Newcastle, or even Australia!)

By Shannon Benton (Thesaurus Girl)

Did you know that not only is Styx a brewery, but they are also a boutique gin distillery in Newcastle? They specialise in local botanical flavours - and summer is almost here. Bet you want to celebrate? You’ve got some extra cash from doing nothing (I…mean…nothing…) during lockdown and now you want to get social. Why not make your summer extra special by trying one, or many, of Styx limited edition gins?

Or maybe you just wanna get a heads up on gin varieties before a whole range of this magic liquor are showcased at ‘The Gin Event’ in February? Check it out here:

Whatever the reason, take a little look at these three unique beauties:

At long last, the collaboration gin with the Hunter Regional Botanical Gardens is ready to be experienced. All botanicals (except the juniper) were collected and foraged at the gardens, making this truly a rare gin to enjoy. The gorgeous flavours of Davidson Plum, Finger Lime, Geraldton Wax and Native Mints make this dry gin extremely unique. This is the epitome of locals supporting locals and giving back to the community - with 20% of the proceeds from the sale of this gin going straight back to the gardens. Only 100 bottles made - get in quick!

Styx don’t need to sell you on this one: it was awarded Silver in the 2021 London Spirits Competition. A beautifully handcrafted and small batch gin that pairs perfectly with Japanese food, it combines locally foraged Kumquats and Mandarin, with Sencha Tea, Sansho Pepper and Juniper. This special drop is to be enjoyed neat or with soda water.

This Brazilian-inspired gin delicately balances the sweet caramel of Acai with Aniseed, Rosemary, Lemon Balm and Sour Sop. You’ll be transported to Copacabana Beach with just one sip.

You can mix your regular gin and tonic, but why not make your Styx special drop exceptional by trying their Dirty Tonic Syrup to go with it? This handcrafted small batch syrup uses Australian botanicals and real Cinchona Bark, giving it its rich, red hue. Specially formulated to enjoy over ice with soda or with just a splash of your favourite citrus-based gin. Cin Cin!
